In Nederland moeten we helaas nog wachten tot februari, maar in de Verenigde Staten is Disney’s nieuwste animatiefilm The Princess and the Frog al 25 miljoen dollar opgebracht in het eerste weekend. Wat zegt de pers daar?

Niet alleen mag het bijzonder genoemd worden dat Disney in een tijd vol digitale animatie teruggaat naar de ouderwetse 2D-tekenfilm; ook is het de eerste waarin een zwarte prinses voorkomt. Dat het bijzonder is, heeft bioscoopgaand Amerika ook ontdekt – de film leverde in het eerste weekend (afgelopen weekend) al 25 miljoen dollar op. Maar is die positieve vibe ook terug te vinden in de recensies?
‘If this was made in Disney's hand-drawn heyday, it might be thought of as the same old, same old, and it may be. But enough time has gone by, with enough recent failures, to make critics glad to see the old Disney formula work again.’ – Associated Content
‘At the end of the day, there's something a little off about the film's message as well. (…) The film offers the worthwhile lesson that sometimes you might have to sacrifice what you want for what you truly need. ‘The Princess and the Frog does the same thing: it may not adhere strictly to the time and place, or to the culture or mood, but it's a an expert, entertaining movie. But, yes, there are drawbacks. It's obvious that Disney executives are salivating at the notion of adding Tiana to their "Princesses" line of merchandise (…), but at least this princess has other things on her agenda than just finding a man. (…) Thankfully, the frogs have enough chemistry to warm things up again, romantically speaking, and the set designs are consistently amazing, including some jazz-age artwork reserved for fantasies and dream sequences.
